Hyper9 Dashboards

Hyper9 Web-based dashboards allow for an unprecedented level of visibility and insight into your virtual environment.

The administrator dashboard gives a real-time view of the health of the virtual environment, spotlights alerts that might be active, and shows top points of contention such as CPU, Memory or Storage.

Hyper9 VEO also ships with a number of other out-of-the-box dashboards that help solve common use cases or problems in the virtual infrastructure: such as Capacity Planning, Reporting, Managerial-Level Views, and Storage I/O Contention.

New dashboards are easily created. Hyper9 dashboards are composed of Widgets. And these widgets are as equally flexible as the dashboards themselves. Widgets can be created, exported, shared and moved around via drag and drop very easily so that you can work the way you want to work.

Hyper9 Capacity Planning Dashboard

Capacity Planning is a key function when managing a virtual environment.

The Hyper9 capacity planning dashboard is a great place to start. It provides a handle on key use cases such as: When are we going to run out of resources (CPU, Memory, or Storage)? When do we need to purchase more resources? How many more workloads can we add in our infrastructure (ex. how many more Linux VMs or Windows VMs can we accommodate)?

Hyper9 also provides key widgets that allow you to understand where you are running short on resources first, as well as provide key proactive alerts that are happening in the background with regard to capacity that tells you about current shortages as well as predictive shortages in the environment.

This video takes a deeper look into capacity planning within the virtual environment. It offers a view into sizing, modeling, and what-if scenario analysis.

Performance Analyzer

Hyper9 is a powerful solution for troubleshooting and monitoring performance issues within your VMware environment.

Hyper9 dashboards are a great place to start. Dashboards such as the administrator and storage dashboards give you great insight into points of contention within your environment . You can analyze things such as CPU ready, memory contention or ballooning, and storage I/O contention.

With the performance analyzer, you can see all of the datastores in your environment, and you can quickly and easily sort across a multitude of metrics. For example:

  • Sort datastores by latency
  • Sort virtual machines by I/O
  • Show top consumers of IOPS in a virtual environment
  • Find which VMs are driving most of the load in a particular datastore

Hyper9 can do this because of the powerful relationships that it maintains between all of the different objects (such as VMs, hosts, clusters, datastores, etc).

Global Trends

You can create Global Trends from searches to track your environment over time so that you can:
  • Track CPU, memory and storage resource usage (even by department)
  • Track global configuration trends

Datacenter Visualizer

With Hyper9 Data Center Visualizer, you can:
  • Get global visual breakdowns of information on the latest state of the datacenter
  • Understand the breakdown of VM and host configurations across the datacenter
  • Break-down information by labels (e.g. by department, or line of business)

Get Organized with Lists

Leverage lists to gather up different VMs across multiple searches and track ad hoc information:
  • Gather-up VMs across multiple searches, to compare or report on
  • Track ad hoc groups of VMs such as the VMs you own, VMs that need patching, etc.
  • Save off multiple lists that can be loaded into the active list at any time
  • Create a default list to get loaded when a user logs in to Hyper9

Share Content in Workspaces

Give others visibility into their VMs by giving them a Hyper9 account and setting up their workspace:
  • Create key searches, reports to provide visibility into the resources being consumed
  • Provide users one click access to what they care about from the "My Content" tab
  • Set up a default search or list for each user to focus on the VMs of interest to them

Compare VMs with VMDNA

Manage change in your virtual environment so that you can:
  • Troubleshoot performance issues due to configuration changes
  • Compare VMs to a gold standard VM/image, and understand the differences
  • Ensure specific VMs are configured the same (e.g. VMs in primary and secondary sites)
  • Ensure change windows go to plan with before and after comparisons

Solving VM Sprawl

VM Sprawl is an often used term in virtualization that is generally used to describe the wasted resources that can occur when virtual machines proliferate.

Hyper9 VEO can detect and prevent VM Sprawl from happening in your VMware environment. With it, you can find, report and alert on:

  • VMs that have not been logged into for any extended period of time
  • "Stale" VMs with inactive disk files
  • Overallocated VMs wasting resouces such as CPU, Memory and Storage
  • "Orphaned" VMDK files that are not completely removed from inventory and wasting storage
  • Snapshots that are out of control and taking up valuable storage

Run Reports

Quickly get to the data you need. Leverage the pre-built reports or generate reports on the VMs you want from search results. Report on:
  • Resource utilization - CPU, memory and storage
  • VM configurations and allocations
  • New VMs to Hyper9
  • Installed applications and hotfixes

Find Virtual Machines

Leverage the power of search to stay on top of your environment:
  1. Get a global view of your virtual environment
  2. Ensure VMs are configured to conform to internal best practices
  3. Isolate VM performance problems
  4. Track new VMs and trends
Use it to:
  1. Find VMs with Tools that are out of date, not running or not installed
  2. Find VMs with connected media attached
  3. Find VMs with less than 10% available disk space
  4. Find VMs that are OFF or Suspended
  5. Find VMs with greater than 60% CPU utilization
  6. Find VMs that are new to the environment in the last 7 days

Monitoring and Alerting

Hyper9 provides users with an extremely powerful monitoring and alerting platform. It ships with nearly 40 different useful alerts, canned, out of the box.

The monitoring and alerting widget on the administrator dashboard offers a number of active alerts that monitor the VMware environment.

It spans a wealth of conditions such as performance, understanding CPU and memory contention, storage contention, capacity-based alerts that notify you when you are going to run out of resources, as well as configuration best practices so that you can stay on top of things such as VM Sprawl.

If you click on an alert within the widget, Hyper9 opens an alert detail view - a powerful view that shows you which objects are affected by this alert. It can also navigate back in time to see when the alert fired in the past and shows you what was affected. These objects can also be added to a list so that you can perform other actions on these objects elsewhere within the Hyper9 product.

Alerts are driven off of the powerful search-based Hyper9 platform. Because of that, you can easily customize, configure or create alerts to operate the way you want them to work and need them to work within your own environment.

You can change the severity of the alert, the items it effects, modify alert suppression, change trigger alerts based on various attributes, leverage multiple notification methods, or fire off an external action based on an alert.

The key takeaway again is that the Hyper9 Alerting and Monitoring functionality is as flexible as the rest of the VEO product because of its underlying search-based platform.
